THE PHILOSOPHY

Objective
The workflow objective is to eliminate effort that adds no value to the final outcome.

Discussion
Studies of our clients' "before" business processes found that only about 1 in every 12 work steps really added any value in achieving the outcome.

11 out of 12 traditional work steps involved mundane "paper shuffling."

This non-value effort included transferring work from one format or location to another and keeping track of where things were in the process. We call this effort "control and transfer" activity. Other industry studies confirm that huge effort is wasted in control and transfer activity.

This "control and transfer" activity is our target for either elimination or automation. In general, if an administrative task does not require human judgment, then it is a candidate for automation.

Just concentrating on those valuable judgment tasks produces massive benefits in the calendar time to complete work and the effort expended.

THE HISTORY

1992 - 1996
WorkMovr was an integrator and developer for the ViewStar workflow system.  WorkMovr developed a ViewStar based product that was sold under the ViewStar trade name.
1996
In December of 1996, WorkMovr wished to move on from the traditional proprietary linear document workflow approach. We developed our own product using Java and open standards.  This was a widespread geography, multiple Enterprise system, with a comprehensive work allocation methodology.
2000
Installations were converted to an HTML user interface.  Screen displays become major areas of effort, and WorkMovr starts on a path to slash the screen display effort.
2001
The WorkMovr Screen Generator is operational. This used a single servlet and a 100% "point and click" approach to bring screen programming down from days to minutes.
2002
WorkMovr AX is launched. The objective is dramatically faster and more economical installation. The Workflow Modeling Tool and Administration subsystems were reengineered with more features and integrity. The API Set was totally revamped with additional functions and J2EE Compliance.
2003
WorkMovr installation becomes a completely "point and click" exercise. A working installation can be done in a day. Linux and MySQL Support added.
2004
The API Set was converted to a Web Services approach. Most customers elected run their applications as a service, hosted and supported by WorkMovr.
2006
WorkMovr was adapted to run completely within Microsoft Sharepoint, and to support Microsoft Groove clients.
2008
We decided to make WorkMovr a free “Open Source” software product.
